I thought that posting a six-word story would be a fun thing to do, so here you go. Well, it was in my opinion brutally simple and straightforward, but it was worth a shot. Sleeping early. These 2 words somehow elude many students, employees and professionals alike. Sleep deprivation has worsened to the point that some of us might be asking ourselves, “What is sleep?” I’ll do you one better – “Why is sleep?” Seriously, many of us now find the concept of sleeping early foreign. We actively forgo it for work, study and commitments, even though we knew all this while the consequences of doing so. Forgoing sleep has adverse impacts on our health in the long term and would reduce our ability to concentrate in the short term. Without the ability to function at peak performance, we are less able to learn and chase after success. Thus, I can safely say, to sleep or not to sleep early is to sleep early. #1: Sleeping Early Keeps Your Mind Healthy
As you slumber, your body parts are working hard to regenerate themselves. New cells are regenerated and dead cells are removed, while your brain and other organs work hard to detox themselves. All in all, your body slowly recharges itself and prepares for a new day. This is especially important for the brain. During sleep, neurones decrease in size by up to 60%, increasing the space between them for waste and toxic materials to be washed away easily. In fact, the brain removes significant amounts of a toxic protein known as amyloid-beta, which is involved in Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, science has shown that sleep and learning are closely linked. Here, new memories are processed and consolidated in the brain, as neurones in the hippocampus repeat the activation patterns that took place while the individual was conscious. This helps to transfer short-term memories held in the hippocampus to other parts of the brain, so as to facilitate the formation of long-term memories. Thus, missing out on sleep could cause one’s learning ability to decline by as much as 40%. That is something that you clearly want to avoid!
#2: Detoxification Of Body Parts
The brain is not the only that needs to clean itself. Sleep affects almost all tissues and organs in the body, from your heart to your skin. As mentioned above, your brain has something called a Glymphatic system which involves the shrinking of neurones so as to create room for toxins to be flushed out. Meanwhile, the body also secretes hormones, which decreases one’s breathing rate and promotes muscle relaxation. On the other hand, sleep deprivation increases inflammation levels, which restricts the body from effectively cleansing itself. The removal of toxic materials allows the unrestricted movement of essential substances and oxygen, which ultimately aids in the regenerative processes of the body. Missing out on sleep impedes the aforementioned processes, which may even cause the stunting of growth in children.
#3: Sleep Improves Immunity
Since sleep affects nearly every part of the body, it is no surprise that it also has a tremendous impact on our immune systems. Consistent sleep increases one’s immunity, while a lack of sleep increases the risks of diseases. When T cells detect an infected cell, they activate integrins, which allow them to adhere to and destroy the latter cells. The T cells of consistent sleepers have been shown to have higher levels of integrin activation than those of sleep-deprived individuals. Moreover, stress hormones may even restrict the functions of T cells in poor sleepers. High concentrations of these hormones may in turn decrease the ability of T cells to kill pathogens, thus weakening the body’s immune system. Another example is the fact that the body releases cytokines, in the presence of infection and inflammation, which help to fight diseases. Without adequate sleep, the body will not be able to produce as much of these cytokines and antibodies. During periods of sickness, the body utilises more energy so as to battle infections and eradicate diseases. This means that the body will have less energy on hand for other processes. During these times, sleep is of paramount importance as it helps to conserve energy and resources.

Writing is something we have been doing ever since our childhoods. All we had to do was pick up a pen or pencil and scribble away. Back in our younger days, writing seemed fun, even transcendent. Now, many of us find it a boring to do, even worse so when we don’t have the option to type. Technology has rewired our minds to prefer things that are more efficient, simple and elegant. We hate apps that have an obnoxious design. Meanwhile, tech companies are trying to make their devices and appliances thinner and lighter. Many of us fail to see the value of writing and dismiss it as a mere hobby or an ancient relic of the past. At most, we only write down what we need to get at the supermarket. What’s even funnier is that our vocabulary has gradually degraded overtime. In fact, I encounter many people who know no substitute for the word “happy” when chatting on WhatsApp. So why should we write then, given that technological advances have basically eroded the need for writing? #1: Writing Helps You To Express Your Feelings
Writing is a great way to release stress – a feeling we all know too well. We have become increasingly absorbed with our jobs and commitments, leaving us with little time for reflection. Many of us have become mindless robots, following a set routine – wake up, work, sleep, repeat. To many, the word “tomorrow” is no different to the word “today”. It’s all the same to them. Writing gives you a sense of time, a sense of what you have done in the present day and what you look forward for the next. This helps to break the monotony between days and allows us to better understand our deepest emotions. Often, we ignore these emotions, hiding them. And when they finally explode, our lives take a big hit. In summary, writing is a great way to understand your thoughts, thoughts that disappear and appear throughout the day. By penning them down on paper, you will be able to capture and study them.
#2: It Lets Your Creativity Run Wild
Much like drawing or painting, writing is a way to express your innate creativity. You can write anything you want. Love science fiction? Go ahead and describe the world of your dreams. It could even be something as simple as planning for your team project tomorrow. Point is, your paper (or text file, if you are using a computer or device) is an open canvas awaiting your ideas. Armed with ideas, a vivid imagination and your amazing brain, anything is possible. Meanwhile, writing activates both your left and right brain hemispheres. According to research, students who read and write extensively show greater creative performance than those who do not.
#3: It Improves Your Communication Skills
Those who write regularly are better able to understand their emotions and those of others. In fact, the ability to empathise is an essential skill in the social world. Furthermore, writing enhances your ability to organise and express your thoughts. This also leads to an increased fluency of speech. This will be useful in team projects of any kind, as you will be able to bring your messages across much more easily, thus allowing your subordinates and superiors alike to understand your ideas at a much deeper level.

#1: Fast Food Is A Major Cause Of Heart-Disease
Heart attacks happen when your heart tissues have their supply of oxygen and glucose cut off. This happens when coronary arteries in your heart become blocked as fatty deposits become stuck on its inner walls. For those interested to learn more, this process is called atherosclerosis, which is responsible for heart attacks. Major causes of atherosclerosis include high cholesterol and sodium intake, lack of exercise, smoking and high blood pressure. So what is the link between heart diseases and fast food then? The answer lies in the fact that fast food products contain high amounts of harmful cholesterol and fat. The risk of heart attack is higher for those who lack exercise and consume fast-food at the same time. In fact, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health showed that consuming fast-food once a week increases the risk of death from coronary heart disease by 20%.
#2: Fast Food Is One Of The Leading Causes Of Type-2 Diabetes
As mentioned before, fast food often contains high amounts of unhealthy cholesterol and fats, and is low in nutrition. In fact, fast food products contain high amounts of calories, low amounts of fibre and the infamous MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate. It is because of these reasons that fast food and obesity are very closely linked. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that most fast food products are addictive in nature, which is mostly because they are incredibly convenient and affordable for what they offer. Right, so how does this cause Type-2 Diabetes then? To begin, we must understand that Type-2 Diabetes is caused by decreased sensitivity to insulin, which is an essential hormone responsible for the regulation of blood glucose concentration. Since fast food products are high in calories, consumption of it will result in high blood glucose levels, which in turn results in a sudden spike of insulin to keep it under control. Those who are overweight tend to have a higher resistance to insulin, thus increasing their vulnerability to Type-2 Diabetes.
#3: Fast Food Affects Cognitive Function And Memory
Fast food products contain a high amount of saturated fats, which is already a cause of heart failure. Firstly, the consumption of saturated fats decreases neurogenesis, which refers to the production of neurones. In fact, the impairment of neurone production might be a cause of dementia and depression. Additionally, increased consumption of saturated fats decreases memory and cognitive function.
It’s fine to consume fast food once in a while, but as with all things in life, it must be done in moderation. Overconsumption of fast food products can have detrimental effects for your health and even lead to death. As they say, without health, there can be no wealth. So, let us learn to pay more attention to our diets and care for our bodies, which are extremely fragile despite of their complexity.

For instance, classical music has been shown to stimulate the mind and improve sleep quality. I personally listen to classical and orchestral music whenever I read or complete a task. You might say, “Hey! Classical music is boring and old! How could I possibly enjoy it?” While it is true that classical music might be considered old, they are gems of the past and are worth listening to. This article will show you why. Studies have shown that listening to classical music helps to improve sleep. It helps to relax the mind and remove anxiety, thereby making sleeping easier. Research has shown that listening to classical music reduces nervous system activity, decreases anxiety and blood pressure. It helps to distract you from your thoughts and relaxes your muscles, getting you in the mood to sleep. This effect is corroborated and confirmed by the fact that children of all ages, including infants and school-going children, sleep better after listening to relaxing, classical music. Anxiety makes memory formation and retrieval more difficult, and stress has been shown to be one of the prominent causes of neurone death. Yes, you saw it correctly. Stress has been shown to kill brain cells and reduce their ability to function properly. On the other hand, listening to classical music has been shown to enhance memory retrieval and helps to trigger and strengthen neural pathways, thereby strengthening synapses between the respective neurones.

#3: They Are Precious Relics Of History
There is a reason to why classical music was able to stand the test of time. Some of the greatest classics still continue to be played and enjoyed by many. The classical period has produced some of the most legendary pieces of all time, which never fail to captivate audiences and listeners of every age. In fact, many of these pieces are used as background music in movies and musicians of all kinds are required to study them, with good reason.
Classical music still plays an important role in the evolution of culture and heritage. For many, it has become an integral part of their lives, something they can’t live without. For musicians, the classical period is an essential part of musical history that has helped to shape our overall understanding of music and its associated cultures. The Key to Success
The key to success is unyielding persistence. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Likewise, success doesn’t just come overnight. Instead, it is the product of years, or even decades of hard work. We can see this even in nature. Planets take years to form, while our brain requires time to consolidate short term memory into long term memory. The moral of the story is this: Nothing comes immediately, and certainly not success!

With that in mind, let us understand that we must approach success one step at a time, day by day. This leads to my next point, and that is consistency. In our pursuit of success, we might not be able to see results immediately and this can be quite frustrating for many. Patience, consistency and delayed gratification are, in fact, very closely linked and they are the keys to success. Consider someone who is trying to develop the habit of reading. After 30 days of daily reading, he/she might complain that he/she finds the habit hard to maintain and might struggle to stay motivated. However, perhaps after a year, he/she, after consistent daily reading, would have gotten used to the habit of reading and would find it effortless.
Let us consider an exponential function as an analogy. The image above shows an example of such. Take a look at the graph at its beginning. Initially, the graph has a very low gradient and it doesn’t look like it’s going to increase much. However, as the x-values increase, the graph gradually becomes steeper and its gradient gradually becomes higher. This applies to life as well. Initially, we might feel like nothing is gained and that we’re not moving in any direction. However, with time, success becomes nearer and more attainable.
Of course, to move towards success, we have to consistently move towards it each day. Conducting a habit of reading or writing everyday, for example, ensures that your writing skills are improving every single day, albeit slowly at first. This might sound daunting, but this is what delayed gratification is all about – trusting the process. Worry about success later, just do what you can do everyday, consistently. Whenever you feel like giving up, remember that failure and struggles are part and parcel of the journey to success. Strive for excellence and be consistent, and success will follow.

So this wraps up my short post for today. I got inspired by the hit Bollywood movie 3 Idiots and decided to discuss the importance of persistence. Expectation #1: They Spend Money Like It’s Nothing
Many of us imagine the rich to spend their money like it’s nothing. We imagine them to spend on all the jewellery, properties and physical items they can get their hands on.
Reality #1: Most of the Rich Are Extremely Frugal!
Here’s the truth. The rich use their money carefully and do not spend it on unnecessary items. Now you might ask, “That’s crazy! They have loads of money, but they don’t do anything with it?” Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Society and its forms of entertainment have brainwashed us into thinking the wealthy live extravagantly. In fact, when we are told to imagine a rich man/woman, we imagine him/her in expensive clothing, with luxurious cars and a dozen villas. However, this is not the practice of the wealthy. The wealthy know that the money spent on these luxuries could be used to start other businesses, invest and save. This multiplies their wealth even more! Of course, the wealthy pamper themselves once in while, however, they understand that those who spend money recklessly are those who will lose their fortunes.
Expectation #2: They Are Wealthy Because of Luck
The majority of us are led to believe that the wealthy either inherited their wealth or got lucky along the way. Many of us believe that the rich got their wealth from the lottery, gambling or being lucky in the stock market, while others believe that the only way to be rich is to inherit it from one’s parents or relatives.
Reality #2: They Are Wealthy Because They Work Hard
Yes, it is true that one can be wealthy because of his/her inheritance or being lucky in the stock market. However, without working hard and using their money carefully, these people will end up losing their wealth and sliding back into poverty. The rich, however, are the ones that are hardworking and persevere. In fact, many who were poor have become rich after years of hard work! One good example is blogging. Many people dismiss blogging as a mere hobby which is unable to generate real and reliable profits. However, there are those who have made their fortune through blogging! But how did they achieve this? These six or seven figure bloggers didn’t just get lucky. In fact, these are the bloggers who endured years of failure and constant learning before achieving their goals! To these people, failure is nothing but an interlude between two successes. You see, you can earn your fortune from just about anything – as long as it does not go against the law and is moral – if you are willing to sacrifice and persist.
Expectation #3: Rich People Are Lazy
It is common to imagine the rich as lazy people who spend every single day enjoying their luxuries and doing nothing else. Most of us believe the rich do not work and live worry-free lives. But is this wholly true?
Reality #3: The Rich Constantly Learn and Look For New Opportunities
Those who are truly wealthy know that lazing around will only result in losing one’s fortune. In fact, the rich understand that change is the only constant and that they have to embrace it. Those who grow arrogant and lazy are those who will fall behind in the race. Knowing this, they learn constantly to keep themselves up to date and look for new opportunities to expand their fortune. Evidently, many of the rich keep a reading habit! These are the people who see the bigger picture.
Attaining, protecting and growing your wealth is a game of strategy. A strategist understands that he/she cannot afford to be lazy or reckless, for he/she would risk losing all that he/she has built. Secondly, being wealthy is a possibility for us all, regardless of our current financial situation. We are all blessed with a mind and it is up to us to use it appropriately and wisely. Thirdly, Rome was not built in a day, was it? Nothing comes for free and everything takes time, so don’t worry if you don’t see results yet.
