Here’s Why YOU Should Write

Writing is something we have been doing ever since our childhoods. All we had to do was pick up a pen or pencil and scribble away. Back in our younger days, writing seemed fun, even transcendent. Now, many of us find it a boring to do, even worse so when we don’t have the option to type. Technology has rewired our minds to prefer things that are more efficient, simple and elegant. We hate apps that have an obnoxious design. Meanwhile, tech companies are try to make their devices and appliances thinner and lighter. Many of us fail to see the value of writing and dismiss it as a mere hobby or an ancient relic of the past. At most, we only write down what we need to get at the supermarket. What’s even funnier is that our vocabulary has gradually degraded overtime. In fact, I encounter many people who know no substitute for the word “happy” when chatting on WhatsApp. So why should we write then, given that technological advances have basically eroded the need for writing? In this article, I shall discuss this topic in greater detail. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter!

#1: Writing Helps You To Express Your Feelings

Writing is a great way to release stress – a feeling we all know too well. We have become increasingly absorbed with our jobs and commitments, leaving us with little time for reflection. Many of us have become mindless robots, following a set routine – wake up, work, sleep, repeat. To many, the word “tomorrow” is no different to the word “today”. It’s all the same to them. Writing gives you a sense of time, a sense of what you have done in the present day and what you look forward for the next. This helps to break the monotony between days and allows us to better understand our deepest emotions. Often, we ignore these emotions, hiding them. And when they finally explode, our lives take a big hit. In summary, writing is a great way to understand your thoughts, thoughts that disappear and appear throughout the day. By penning them down on paper, you will be able to capture and study them.

#2: It Lets Your Creativity Run Wild

Much like drawing or painting, writing is a way to express your innate creativity. You can write anything you want. Love science fiction? Go ahead and describe the world of your dreams. It could even be something as simple as planning for your team project tomorrow. Point is, your paper (or text file, if you are using a computer or device) is an open canvas awaiting your ideas. Armed with ideas, a vivid imagination and your amazing brain, anything is possible. Meanwhile, writing activates both your left and right brain hemispheres. According to research, students who read and write extensively show greater creative performance than those who do not.

#3: It Improves Your Communication Skills

Those who write regularly are better able to understand their emotions and those of others. In fact, the ability to empathise is an essential skill in the social world. Furthermore, writing enhances your ability to organise and express your thoughts. This also leads to an increased fluency of speech. This will be useful in team projects of any kind, as you will be able to bring your messages across much more easily, thus allowing your subordinates and superiors alike to understand your ideas at a much deeper level.

Conclusion

Writing is something I would encourage all of my readers to try. Perhaps you could try to write a few lines or keep a personal diary. I hope that you did enjoy this article, and if you did, do consider giving it a like! Thanks for reading!

How YOU Can Improve Your Memory

Argh! I can’t remember what I’ve read yesterday! Ridiculous!” Ever experienced this? Sometimes we just find ourselves forgetting what we think we will never forget. Isn’t it annoying? So, what we can do about this? Is there anything that we can do to mitigate the process of forgetting? Or are we all destined to forget everything we have learnt? Well, both yes and no. In this post, I will show you how YOU (yes, you) can improve your memory. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter so you’ll never ever miss any new articles!

#1: Focus!

Photo by Tirachard Kumtanom on Pexels.com

In my previous articles, I touched on the fact that the brain is simply unable to multitask and that trying to do so will only kill your productivity. This applies to memory as well. Doing more than two things at once affects how your mind encodes information. Often, we find ourselves forgetting what we have learnt or read and we blame it on our mind’s inability to recall information. Let me ask you this question. How can your mind forget something that was not even stored in your brain in the first place? Well, stop blaming your poor brain. Instead, amend your bad habits. Let’s say that you want to study a chapter of Chemistry today. To facilitate a conducive learning environment, you should place all your electronic devices somewhere inaccessible, perhaps in a locked drawer. Furthermore, practice mindfulness when you study. This means staying focused and motivated with your work at hand. (No daydreaming!) This allows your mind to absorb information much more readily.

#2: Method of Association – Using Mnemonics and Acronyms

Photo by Ann Nekr on Pexels.com

The mind is an efficient machine. In other words, your mind will instantly delete anything it deems useless so as to ensure the healthy functioning of the brain. This also effectively prevents information overload as it allows the individual to only remember what he/she needs for survival. This can be both good and bad. Sometimes, your mind interprets what you think is useful as trash and the vice versa is true as well. Why is it that we can remember the embarrassing moments of the past without flaw, while we struggle to remember what we have read as recently as a day ago? This is because your mind places different degrees of importance on different memories. Let’s say you tripped and fell due to a plastic bag on the ground a year ago. I bet you will most likely recall this event today! In this case, this is because your brain has judged this memory as essential to your survival, thus effectively preventing you from making the same mistake again. Do you remember the times when people laughed at you? I can confidently say that you do as well! So why is it that your brain still retains such humiliating memories? In the early history of mankind, being part of a group was a matter of life and death. Being alone only increases one’s chances of being lost and being hunted by predatory animals. As a result, our minds have evolved to prioritise social cohesion and that aforementioned memory (the one about you being laughed to death by others) helps you to understand the minds of others and spurs you to fit in. Meanwhile, our minds have developed to appreciate humour, with the same purpose of helping one build friendships and social connections with other fellow humans.

So what does this have to do with improving our memory? To retain information much more effectively, we can learn to take full advantage of the evolutionary features of our brains. We can do this by using acronyms to represent lists or sentences. The funnier and weirder the acronym, the better the recall effectiveness. You could also utilise rhymes to remember certain information. For instance, “A knight on the rim is grim.” helps chess players remember that a knight is most powerful in the centre of the board.

#3: Taking Omega-3 Supplements

Photo by Sebastian Coman Photography on Pexels.com

Our brains are about 60% fat. The architecture of our minds are such that we require an adequate amount of fatty acids to sustain its performance. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in this. Research has shown that consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, which include Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), help to build cell membranes and prevent inflammation in the body. Meanwhile, Omega-3 fatty acids are key components in the myelin sheaths of neurones, which insulates nerve fibres and increases transmission speed of nerve impulses. This boosts memory formation and increases the processing speed of the mind. In fact, the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to prevent certain psychotic disorders such as depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Here’s Why You Should Read Comics

Comic reading has become a favourite pastime for many people around the world. Due to the fact that comics utilise graphics to convey different stories and messages, it has become a popular and attractive form of entertainment for children, the youth and the elderly. There’s always something for everyone. Love espionage and the world of spies? You have James Bond comics. Love science fiction and Star Wars? Star Wars comics can be bought online and even found in your local library. But is there a good reason as to why you should even read comics in the first place? In this post, I will discuss why you should read comics and how it benefits your health. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter!

#1: They Are Exciting

Photo by khairul nizam on Pexels.com

After a long day at work or school, many of us just don’t have the motivation to read anything anymore. Well, don’t worry. Comics are easy to read, as you no longer have to imagine the environment or situation the character(s) is/are in, as in normal books. Comics give you a visual understanding of what is taking place in the story and thus, the number of words you actually have to read decreases. This subsequently requires less brain power. This is the main reason as to why many children prefer comics to normal books during childhoods. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you abandon text-based books totally! Furthermore, the vivid visualisation of story events may evoke a sense of wonderment and excitement, which in comparison to good, old and plain text, may seem 100% less boring.

#2: They Foster Deeper Connections With The Story

Photo by Wallace Chuck on Pexels.com

As mentioned before, comics specialise in presenting stories and events in a graphical manner. This helps readers to connect much more deeply with the story as compared to a normal text based book. For example, rather than stating “He was frustrated.”, a comic drawing would probably depict the character with a frown. As humans, we tend to relate more to what we see, such as facial expressions and colour. As such, not only are we able to remember the story and the associated comic drawings much effectively, but we may also find ourselves having a higher degree of appreciation for the story. For those who love colour and pictures, comics are for you!

#3: They Help To Foster A Reading Habit

Photo by Mau00ebl BALLAND on Pexels.com

For many teenagers and adults alike, starting a reading habit can be difficult and many of us might end up complaining that we have no motivation to read. We’ve become so used to modern forms of entertainment, like television and video gaming, which not only leaves us with little to read, but also results in us becoming more and more dependent on visual forms of entertainment. We then begin to find reading a chore. So, is this a dead end? No! Comics are a great starting point for those looking to pick up a reading habit. This is because comics are easy to read, as they usually utilise less complicated terms and vocabulary. Likewise, the word count is drastically reduced, as all the focus is placed on the comic drawings. Well you might ask, “Hey! But if I keep reading comics, won’t I be learning nothing?” This is, firstly, a temporary measure (you can continue to read comics if you want). Secondly, the main reason as to why you should first read comics before moving on to harder text-based books, is that it helps to install the habit of picking up a piece of reading material every day. Later, when you have gotten used to doing this, you may eventually find that picking up an autobiography or even a textbook requires less willpower. This is because you have already trained your mind to do so earlier.

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Gamble

Some of us might end up gambling from time to time. We are enticed by the opportunity to earn some cold, hard cash. But is it worth your time and your money? Gambling has been shown to be a harmful and destructive habit which destroys relationships and induces poverty. In this article, we shall discuss this topic in further detail. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter! Without further ado, let’s jump right in.

#1: You Will End Up Losing Money

Many become excited by the prospect by earning large amounts of money in the casino or even illegal gambling dens. However, overall, you will only end up losing your hard-earned money. Let’s take a look at an example. About 85% of adults in the U.S. have gambled at least once in their life and the gambling industry takes in about $500 billion a year. Yes, that’s a lot of money. In fact, statistics have shown that over 95% of gamblers end up losing money overall. But how? This is because the games in casinos are handled in such a way that the casinos, otherwise known as the “house”, will almost always have the advantage. Furthermore, casinos leverage on the compulsion of gamblers to keep them coming back.

#2: Relationships Are Destroyed

Photo by burak kostak on Pexels.com

People who suffer from gambling addiction may find themselves siphoning large amounts of money from their precious savings and those of their loved ones, just to sustain their habits. Some might even engage in illegal activities so as to repay the debts caused by gambling. Furthermore, these addicts almost always spend large amounts of time gambling and report difficulty in quitting. Consequently, the time these people spend with their loved ones and family decreases, and naturally relationships are broken. A child might be ashamed of his father’s compulsive gambling behaviour, while a spouse might become increasingly suspicious and untrusting towards his/her partner. This is often worsened by financial difficulties caused by the aforementioned addiction.

#3: Mental Health

Photo by Kelly Lacy on Pexels.com

By itself, gambling can be a highly stressful activity, with numerous highs and lows. As a gambler becomes increasingly consumed in the activity, he/she might experience mood swings, anxiety and decreased self control. He/she might find himself/herself worrying constantly about whether he/she will gain or lose money in the next run. Losing money can be extremely uncomfortable and demoralising for such individuals, thereby triggering explosive outbursts of anger. This is just the tip of the iceberg. After a long period of time and without changes to such behaviour, the individual might find himself/herself in financial difficulties. This is worsened by the broken relationships caused by gambling. As such, the individual’s stress might culminate to a point where he/she thinks of suicide. To add credibility to this point, research commissioned by a leading UK gambling charity, GambleAware, found that gamblers were six times more likely to have thoughts of suicide or attempt suicide.

Conclusion

Gambling is not a reliable way to earn money and most of you who have done so before might find yourselves losing large amounts of money. I hope that this article was helpful to you, and if it was, do give it a like! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for my next article.

Will Money Make You Happy?

This is a controversial question pondered by many. Indeed, money can buy you lots of stuff and grant you a better life. But is it the key to happiness? It is the desire of all men to be happy and many aim to be rich. However, money can also blind you, destroy you and take everything you love away. So, is there a definite answer? In this article, we shall discuss this topic in detail and analyse whether money is the definite answer to happiness. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter! Your support is greatly appreciated. Without further ado, let’s begin right away.

Yes, Money Can Give You Happiness To A Certain Degree

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

As mentioned earlier, money is able to grant you a better life. It can be used to buy food, luxuries and many other items that you desire. Money takes care of our basic needs and ensures our survival. It gives you freedom to control your life, do what you love to do and help others as well. For example, saving up money ensures that your current/future children will not have to worry about their education. I think we can all agree on this point.

However, There’s A Catch

Source: https://www.financemagnates.com/forex/bloggers/greed-vs-generosity-which-gives-a-better-competitive-advantage/

Money is indeed useful and important in our lives. However, obsession with money can end up destroying you. Many people yearn to be rich and often, quickly. As a result, they are willing to do almost anything just to get more money in their pockets. For example, some might end up becoming addicted to gambling while others might engage in illegal activities. On the other hand, many become obsessed with the power of money and what it can do. In fact, many end up spending a large portion of their money on unneeded and frivolous luxuries. Consequently, they are most likely to end up in debt and poverty. But this doesn’t stop here. Not only does the greed of money affect your financial decisions, but it also changes your character and how you interact with others. It creates selfish men and/or women who will stop at nothing to gain more power and money, even if it is at the expense of their loved ones. Still unconvinced? Mr. Krabs from the famous Spongebob Squarepants cartoon show is a great example of how money can influence men and is the personification of greed itself.

Conclusion

This has been a short post so far, but the main point I would like to bring across is that, as with all things in life, everything must be done in moderation. Sure, money is important, but we shouldn’t be overly obsessed with it. We must learn to be content with what we have and to place God, our families, our loved ones and human life above the material things of the world. The greed and obsession of money has destroyed many men in history, so don’t let yourself become the next person on the list. The Horrible Consequences of War

Nations are brought to war by their leaders for numerous reasons. These include social and economic inequalities, politics or just sheer greed. But is it all worth it? As humans on this Earth, we have seen our fair share of tragedies and disasters, but nothing compares to the tragedy of war. The sad reality is that wars are constantly fought. After every war, many nations only seek to prepare for the next. Peace is just reduced to the mere interlude between one war and the next. You would think that, being the most intelligent animal species on Earth, human beings would be able to cooperate in peace, but that is almost never the case. This article will show you exactly why wars should never be fought and why peace is so important. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter! #1: Innocent People Are Made to Suffer

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz_concentration_camp

Many men and women, many of which unwilling participants, risk and lose their lives on the battlefield. On the other hand, many civilians are sent to concentration camps to be brutally tortured and executed, sometimes just for the fun of it. In fact, war crimes come naturally with any war, as parties on both sides hate each other. The image above shows the infamous Auschwitz death camp which was a place of suffering for many captured Jews during World War 2. On last estimate, more than 1.1 million people were killed there.

#2: Property is Destroyed

In the process of any war, property is destroyed. Towns and houses are obliterated by artillery fire, and in more ancient times, the projectiles fired by trebuchets. Civilians may lose many if not all of their possessions during a war and are forced to evict their former hometowns. Livelihoods are destroyed and many lose their wealth, as many civilians search frantically for a new dwelling place, sometimes to no avail.

#3: Public Panic and Fear

Source: https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd-in-canada

Death comes with any war. And with death, comes public fear and panic. During a war, civilians may lose their possessions and loved ones. Furthermore, they live in fear that they might be attacked anytime at an unknown time and location. As a result, many people develop eating and stress disorders, as they struggle with trauma. In fact, many World War 2 survivors still carry them to this day.

Conclusion

Human lives are too precious to be lost to petty feuds and arguments. If only nations will learn to bury the hatchet and work together, the world would be a much better place. Let us remember that wars harm the parties on both sides and that innocent people are the ones who bear the brunt of the war. App Review: Forest

Forest is an incredible app that brings procrastination to an end. In fact, its ingenious design has brought it to the number #1 spot in the App Store. This article will show you how this app works and how it is useful in our lives. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter. Without further ado, let’s hop right in!

How The App Works

Source: https://joesdaily.com/tech/forest-app-is-here-to-help-you-stay-focused/

The mechanics of Forest are pretty simple. First, select a timer between 10 to 120 minutes. As the timer runs, your tree would grow. When the timer ends, your tree(s) will be added to your garden. However, there’s a catch. If you unlock your phone before the timer ends, your tree dies. This dead tree will also be added to your garden and you must spend about 60 coins to delete that record. You are able to view your garden and statistics in the app as well. Also, you are able to plant a real tree in life for 2500 coins! How cool is that?

What I Like About The App

  1. It has a minimalistic design
  2. It’s simple to use
  3. The plants in the app look absolutely beautiful!
  4. It provides additional motivation to stay focused
  5. You can save the world by planting a real tree for 2500 coins!

How It Benefits Our Lives

In the present world, staying focused has never been harder. With technology everywhere, it is easy to be distracted by our devices and surroundings. In fact, our mobile phones are major sources of distraction. One notification is enough to draw our attentions away. Forest is a solution to this problem. By using positive and negative reinforcement, focusing becomes easier and we are able to focus on our tasks at hand. Seeing the trees you have planted in your garden also provides a sense of satisfaction and joy.

Conclusion

We all need a break from technology and Forest does just that. In fact, this app is so powerful that I recommend it to all students and working adults. I hope that this article was helpful to you and if it was, do consider giving it a like! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for my next article! If you would like to learn how you can increase your productivity, do visit my article at https://bestofwrite.com/2020/12/19/heres-how-you-can-increase-your-productivity/.

Here’s How You Can Increase Your Productivity

It’s easy to get distracted. A notification alert from your mobile phone is enough to throw you off course. We end up procrastinating and we never get our tasks done. So, how do we increase our productivity? This article will show you exactly how to. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter. Without further ado, let’s hop right in!

#1: Clear Your Surroundings

By getting rid of potential causes of distraction, you are better able to focus on your task at hand. Can’t stand that mobile phone? Put it in a separate room. Can’t stop fiddling with markers? Chuck them away. It’s that simple. Still find that you can’t focus at home? Find an environment that suits you. It could be the local Starbucks, a public sitting area or even the park.

#2: Download Apps That Lock Your Phone Temporarily

Photo by Daria Shevtsova on Pexels.com

For this, I recommend Forest. Forest is an excellent productivity that locks your phone for a selected time. While your device is locked, the app will “grow” a virtual tree, which will be added to your garden. However, using your phone before the timer ends kills the tree. This app provides you with additional incentive to complete your tasks and stay off your phone. At first, this might seem hard to accomplish. However, seeing your trees in your garden will provide you with an unrivalled sense of satisfaction and achievement.

#3: Listen To Music

Photo by Jess Bailey Designs on Pexels.com

You might have thought that steps #1 and #2 were enough. However, the silence of your surroundings can be incredibly unbearable. Music helps to fill this void and quietens your mind, thereby providing you with concentration. Of course, the choice of your music matters too. Take care not to choose music that would distract you. For example, listening to rock music makes some people tap to its rhythm. I personally recommend listening to classical or orchestral music.

#4: Avoid Multitasking

Believe it or not, when you multitask, you actually aren’t multitasking. Mind blown? What you really are doing is switch-tasking. By nature, the mind is unable to focus on two or more items at once. So, by “multitasking”, you are shifting your attention constantly from one item to another. Naturally, the quality of your work diminishes. The solution to this problem is completing your tasks in a straight line. In fact, this is a tactic used by Samurai warriors when they are outnumbered. They will position themselves in such a way that their opponents would move in a straight line towards them. This allows the Samurai to focus on one opponent at a time. This concept can also be applied to our daily lives. Instead of overwhelming ourselves, let us focus on one task at once.

Conclusion

So that wraps up 4 ways you can increase your productivity. We all know staying focused isn’t easy sometimes and that our distractions can get the better of us. I hope that this article was helpful to you and if it was so, do consider giving it a like! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for my next post!

Wooden vs Mechanical Pencil: Which To Choose

At some point in our childhoods, most of us have wondered which writing instrument is the best. Some of us used mechanical pencils in our childhood and continue to do so today in the workplace or for general use. However, some of us are die-hard fans of wooden pencils. There are many possible reasons to the choice we make and this article will attempt to address this age-old debate. Before you continue reading, do follow me on and subscribe to the newsletter. Without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Reasons to Use a Mechanical Pencil

#1: It’s Eco-Friendly

Photo by mali maeder on Pexels.com

A mechanical pencil can last for years, that is if you take good care of it and don’t break it. In fact, mechanical pencils are more durable than wooden pencils, as they do not require sharpening and can survive the occasional fall. Furthermore, some mechanical pencils are made out of recycled plastic or metal. Thus, choosing a mechanical pencil helps to reduce your carbon footprint and save the environment.

#2: It Doesn’t Require Any Sharpening

Photo by George Becker on Pexels.com

We’ve all been there and we know how annoying or frustrating sharpening a pencil can be. A mechanical pencil, however, requires no sharpening. Even if you break the lead, all you have to do is push more lead out by pressing the top button and you are ready to write again. It’s that simple. Another point to note is that the length of a wooden pencil decreases with increased sharpening. Eventually, it becomes so short that it virtually becomes unusable. A mechanical pencil, on the other hand, faces none of these issues. Amazingly, all you have to do if you run out of lead is to refill your mechanical pencil with more lead.

#3: It Provides a Sense of Ownership

Photo by MESSALA CIULLA on Pexels.com

Mechanical pencils are able to withstand heavy amounts of usage and can last for decades. Unlike their wooden counterparts, they are completely reusable and are able to provide a sense of ownership a disposable wooden pencil can never provide. For those sentimental folks out ther, a mechanical pencil will be a great writing instrument which will always remind you of past memories.

#4: Mechanical Pencils are More Ergonomic

Source: https://wowpencils.com/pentel-graphgear-1000-review/

Unlike wooden pencils, which can be quite painful to hold after hours of usage, most mechanical pencils come with a rubber or metal grip, although the latter usually comes at a higher price. As a result, mechanical pencils are more comfortable to hold over long periods of usage. For example, the Pentel Graphgear 1000, as shown in the image above, comes with a metal grip with inbuilt rubber pads for a more comfortable writing experience.

However, there are also some reasons as to why some people prefer to use wooden pencils.

Reasons to Use a Wooden Pencil

#1: Artistic Use

Photo by Blu Byrd on Pexels.com

Wooden pencils are widely used by artists nowadays and for good reason. Shading with a wooden pencil is much easier as a mechanical pencil usually only produces fine lines. A wooden pencil can also be much easier to hold while drawing on an easel as it is lighter than mechanical pencils which may have a metallic body.

#2: It Is Affordable

For those who rarely use pencils, a wooden pencil is good enough. 5 USD are enough to buy 24 pencils or more (a pack of pencil usually contains 12 packs, so this means 5 USD is enough to afford 2 packs of pencils which gives 24 pencils), which is quite a lot for casual use. This is way cheaper than a mechanical pencil, which may cost about 1 to 40 USD depending on its quality. Furthermore, mechanical pencil lead may cost another 1-3 USD per pack. However, for long term use, I would still prefer using a mechanical pencil.

Conclusion

A mechanical pencil is way better than a wooden pencil due to its durability, reusability and simplicity. However, some might like the feel of a wooden pencil while others might find a mechanical pencil more convenient. Whether or not to use the former or the latter depends entirely up to you, although I must say I prefer using a mechanical pencil.
