Writing is something we have been doing ever since our childhoods. All we had to do was pick up a pen or pencil and scribble away. Back in our younger days, writing seemed fun, even transcendent. Now, many of us find it a boring to do, even worse so when we don’t have the option to type. Technology has rewired our minds to prefer things that are more efficient, simple and elegant. We hate apps that have an obnoxious design. Meanwhile, tech companies are try to make their devices and appliances thinner and lighter. Many of us fail to see the value of writing and dismiss it as a mere hobby or an ancient relic of the past. At most, we only write down what we need to get at the supermarket. What’s even funnier is that our vocabulary has gradually degraded overtime. In fact, I encounter many people who know no substitute for the word “happy” when chatting on WhatsApp. So why should we write then, given that technological advances have basically eroded the need for writing? #1: Writing Helps You To Express Your Feelings

Writing is a great way to release stress – a feeling we all know too well. We have become increasingly absorbed with our jobs and commitments, leaving us with little time for reflection. Many of us have become mindless robots, following a set routine – wake up, work, sleep, repeat. To many, the word “tomorrow” is no different to the word “today”. It’s all the same to them. Writing gives you a sense of time, a sense of what you have done in the present day and what you look forward for the next. This helps to break the monotony between days and allows us to better understand our deepest emotions. Often, we ignore these emotions, hiding them. And when they finally explode, our lives take a big hit. In summary, writing is a great way to understand your thoughts, thoughts that disappear and appear throughout the day. By penning them down on paper, you will be able to capture and study them.

#2: It Lets Your Creativity Run Wild

Much like drawing or painting, writing is a way to express your innate creativity. You can write anything you want. Love science fiction? Go ahead and describe the world of your dreams. It could even be something as simple as planning for your team project tomorrow. Point is, your paper (or text file, if you are using a computer or device) is an open canvas awaiting your ideas. Armed with ideas, a vivid imagination and your amazing brain, anything is possible. Meanwhile, writing activates both your left and right brain hemispheres. According to research, students who read and write extensively show greater creative performance than those who do not.

#3: It Improves Your Communication Skills

Those who write regularly are better able to understand their emotions and those of others. In fact, the ability to empathise is an essential skill in the social world. Furthermore, writing enhances your ability to organise and express your thoughts. This also leads to an increased fluency of speech. This will be useful in team projects of any kind, as you will be able to bring your messages across much more easily, thus allowing your subordinates and superiors alike to understand your ideas at a much deeper level.

Star Wars comics can be bought online and even found in your local library. But is there a good reason as to why you should even read comics in the first place? #1: They Are Exciting

After a long day at work or school, many of us just don’t have the motivation to read anything anymore. Well, don’t worry. Comics are easy to read, as you no longer have to imagine the environment or situation the character(s) is/are in, as in normal books. Comics give you a visual understanding of what is taking place in the story and thus, the number of words you actually have to read decreases. This subsequently requires less brain power. This is the main reason as to why many children prefer comics to normal books during childhoods. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you abandon text-based books totally! Furthermore, the vivid visualisation of story events may evoke a sense of wonderment and excitement, which in comparison to good, old and plain text, may seem 100% less boring.

#2: They Foster Deeper Connections With The Story

As mentioned before, comics specialise in presenting stories and events in a graphical manner. This helps readers to connect much more deeply with the story as compared to a normal text based book. For example, rather than stating “He was frustrated.”, a comic drawing would probably depict the character with a frown. As humans, we tend to relate more to what we see, such as facial expressions and colour. As such, not only are we able to remember the story and the associated comic drawings much effectively, but we may also find ourselves having a higher degree of appreciation for the story. For those who love colour and pictures, comics are for you!

#3: They Help To Foster A Reading Habit

For many teenagers and adults alike, starting a reading habit can be difficult and many of us might end up complaining that we have no motivation to read. We’ve become so used to modern forms of entertainment, like television and video gaming, which not only leaves us with little to read, but also results in us becoming more and more dependent on visual forms of entertainment. We then begin to find reading a chore. So, is this a dead end? No! Comics are a great starting point for those looking to pick up a reading habit. This is because comics are easy to read, as they usually utilise less complicated terms and vocabulary. Likewise, the word count is drastically reduced, as all the focus is placed on the comic drawings. Well you might ask, “Hey! But if I keep reading comics, won’t I be learning nothing?” This is, firstly, a temporary measure (you can continue to read comics if you want). Secondly, the main reason as to why you should first read comics before moving on to harder text-based books, is that it helps to install the habit of picking up a piece of reading material every day. Later, when you have gotten used to doing this, you may eventually find that picking up an autobiography or even a textbook requires less willpower. This is because you have already trained your mind to do so earlier.

Here’s Why Smoking Is Bad For You

Smoking has become one of the most dangerous habits in the world. In fact, tobacco use has been shown to kill more than 5.4 million people a year! What’s even more shocking is that approximately 1 billion people in the world are smokers! But what can account for this ridiculously high fatality rate? One of the top reasons as to why many people are addicted to smoking is the prospect of stress release. Nicotine, which is one of the many components of a cigarette, is an addictive stimulant drug that causes adrenaline release. Thus, a smoker may experience a sudden release of stress and may feel temporarily relaxed. This keeps them coming back for more and many smokers may begin to experience uncontrollable urges to relapse. If left unchecked for a prolonged period of time, this bad habit gradually becomes an addiction, as your mind comes to rely heavily on the stress-releasing effects of cigarettes for pleasure. At this point, kicking the habit becomes insanely difficult and therapy is advised.

#2: It Destroys Your Health

Many smokers and members of the population are unaware of the toxic ingredients that make up a cigarette. Let’s do a quick check. Do you know that tar is present in the cigarette? Well, if you don’t know, you’d better continue reading. Tar is basically carcinogenic. In other words, it increases the risk of lung cancer. Furthermore, it paralyses cilia (the hair like structures on the surface of ciliated cells) lining air passages, thereby increasing risks of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Likewise, smoking causes you to take in unhealthy amounts of carbon monoxide, which combines permanently with haemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin. This means the ability of your blood to carry oxygen is reduced. Well, you get the picture here. Smoking is extremely bad for your health and if you don’t quit, death is at your doorstep, for real.

#3: It’s A Waste of Money

Think about it. Isn’t spending money on useless and meaningless things which serve no purpose just a waste of money? Well this applies to smoking as well. What’s even worse that you are driving yourself closer to death with every new cigarette box you buy. Its health effects notwithstanding, smoking is a habit which will wash your money down the drain. Think about how much money you would have saved if you were to stop buying cigarettes for a year. According to the National Cancer Institute, the average cost of a pack of smokes is $6.28. Now let us do some simple calculations. Buying a pack of smokes a day would cost you $188 per month. This would in turn cost you $2,292 a year! Likewise, a ten year smoking habit will cost you $22,920! Well, this is assuming that you only buy 1 cigarette box a day, which is highly unlikely as your mind becomes more and more addicted to and reliant on smoking. Think about what you could do with all that money. Think about how you could use it to provide a better life for your family. Think about how many skills and knowledge you could have learnt using all that money.

Firstly, I would like to emphasise that this point is not as important as the previous 2. This is because blogging can be frustrating at times, and if money is your only motivation, I can assure you that you would have failed before you even started. This is simply because, as with all things in life, true success comes when you do what you love. Therefore, if you find that you do not enjoy blogging, don’t blog, as doing what you don’t like will not generate you any positive results. So, let us begin this point with this understanding in mind.


Many of us reduce blogging to a mere hobby which is unable of generating any long term profits. However, this isn’t true! Blogging is like painting on an empty canvas; the possibilities are endless! It is up to you to be creative, the way you like it. For example, you could offer your audience the option to subscribe to your paid newsletter, which provides weekly reads of your written stories and narratives. Not sure what to do? Fret not! All you have to do is blog first and worry about the money later. Yes, I’m not kidding. As you consistently blog and garner an audience, you will start to earn money from ad-revenue and perhaps even paid collaborations with other fellow bloggers! The Importance of Habits

There are many things we do everyday without a second thought. Our bodies automatically react and act accordingly to the cues of our surroundings. These are called habits. Some habits are great, while some others are destructive. The habits we possess defines who we are and who we will become, as actions speak louder than words. However, we must realise that our habits are the driving force behind our actions. In fact, the importance of habits is often ignored and overlooked by many. Habits determine our identity and the way we see ourselves. For example, if you play badminton regularly, you might see yourself as an athlete. Likewise, if you write regularly, you might see yourself as a writer. Your perceived identity influences most of the actions you take in your life, your values and guiding principles.

Good habits inch you closer to success while bad habits nudge you closer to failure. The actions we take everyday due to our habits, while seemingly insignificant, influence how we manage our finances, set our goals and work towards them. Good habits like reading, for example, provides us knowledge related to our fields. The habit of planning a timetable also helps us to use our time wisely and productively. However, bad habits like smoking wastes your hard-earned money and damages your health. It could also be as simple as being addicted to that latest mobile game or playing tons of ranked Mobile Legends everyday. These habits above waste time and decrease productivity, thereby leading you away from success.

#3: Habits Help You To Be Productive Even When You Feel Unmotivated

There are days we find hard to be productive. You might have worked a long shift the previous day and missed out on sleep. The good news is that habits require little willpower to work. The University College London defines habits as “behaviours which are performed automatically because they have been performed frequently in the past. This repetition creates a mental association between the situation (cue) and action (behaviour) which means that when the cue is encountered the behaviour is performed automatically. Automaticity has a number of components, one of which is lack of thought.” Your body naturally acts the way it has multiple times before, with minimal to no effort. However, there is a limit. If you haven’t been sleeping for the past few days, even your habits can’t save you as the human body can only go so far.

#4: Habits Provide You With Calmness

As stated under point #4, habits help to simplify our lives. We no longer have to use our precious willpower to get something done. As a result, we are provided with calmness of mind as our stress to get things done is removed. We start to lead happier lives as our minds are able to focus on the more important things of life. Indeed, a detached mind naturally possesses clarity and makes wiser choices.

Should You Read E-books Instead of Physical Books?

Almost everything is done online nowadays. Credit card payments, online shopping, you name it. As the internet and technology dominates our lives, we are given a choice as to whether we should or should not retain our old ways. This is particularly true for reading. Nowadays, even reading is done on our mobile devices and e-readers. Trips to the bookstore are now unnecessary as a click is all that it takes to order our books online, which is delivered instantly to our devices and e-readers. With that in mind, I will be discussing whether we should read e-books instead of physical books. My Experience

Two years ago, I got myself the Kindle Paperwhite 4. Before that, I was mainly skeptical of the fact that reading was reduced to just reading a screen. It just felt unreal. To get started, all I had to do was have a stable wifi connection and my collection of e-books would download in the background. Furthermore, e-books usually only occupy about 2-5 MB of storage, which pales in comparison to the mighty 8 GB of storage the Paperwhite possesses. Well, your mobile phones could have higher amounts of storage of up to 256 GB or more, but 8GB is more than enough for an e-reader. This means that you could hold thousands of books on your device without worrying about storage issues. This was very beneficial for a person like me who does not have much space on my bookshelves. Your collection of books are also completely accessible wherever you bring your device, as e-books literally provide you with a portable bookshelf. Finding a book among the thousands of books you have in your collection is as simple as using the search function on your device. Another function that I am most grateful for is the ability to use a pre-installed dictionary together with your e-book. Gone are the days where you have to separately search for the meaning of an unknown word on Google. All you have to do is hold your finger over a word and it’s meaning will pop up right away. All I can say is that e-books have brought me great convenience and provided me with a great reading experience.

So What Does it Mean For You?

If you are like me and have very little bookshelf space, e-books are going to be a huge life-saver. Furthermore, e-books are usually cheaper compared to hardcopy books and may have promotions from time to time on Amazon or other platforms. The instant delivery is also a huge game changer. There’s just no need for a trip to your local bookstore anymore. Reading books in the dark have also become easier as your device provides lighting, so there’s no need to get yourself a portable reading light anymore. Some e-readers also have warm lighting that filter out harmful blue light and make reading in the dark much more enjoyable. One such e-reader is the Kindle Oasis. However, Physical Books are Fine Too!

Of course, the choice is ultimately yours. Some of you may be die-hard fans of hardcopy books. To you, nothing beats the smell of good-old paper and the feeling of turning a page. You could also be used to jotting down notes directly on the pages itself and underlining keywords with a pencil. On the other hand, physical books have no need for an internet connection or electricity. Last but not least, many treasure the feeling of ownership an e-reader or e-book cannot provide. So, in conclusion, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. It depends entirely on what you prefer and all you have to do is to follow your heart.

This reduces the risk of injury you might face from cycling on an exercise bike, while still providing you with an effective workout.

Cycling on an exercise bike utilises numerous muscle groups, such as those of your back, legs and thigh. Regular cycling helps to tone these muscles and build muscular strength. If you feel like giving yourself a challenging workout, you could give yourself a higher resistance level to cycle with. Likewise, if you are tired and don’t feel as energised, you could give yourself a lower resistance level to work with. Furthermore, the ability to determine and control the resistance level of your bike makes it suitable for adults and children of any age.

Cycling on an exercise bike is a great cardiovascular workout. It is a high intensity workout and get your heart pumping. Cycling regularly has been shown to increase the efficiency of your heart at pumping blood. Likewise, it also lowers blood pressure, especially if you have high blood pressure, and helps to regulate your blood sugar levels. Last but not least, as I mentioned earlier, cycling on an exercise bike helps to reduce bad cholesterol levels, thereby resulting in less plague build-up in your arteries and reducing the risk of heart attack. Research has also shown that cycling on a stationary bike for 30 minutes a day and 5 days per week can extend your lifespan.

In the long run, reading can help improve your vocabulary, memory, overall intelligence and prevent mental diseases like dementia. In fact, research has shown that reading helps to reduce the rate of mental deterioration as we age and the decline of other faculties of the mind.

In this hectic world of the present, we are constantly bombarded by distractions, stress and worrying thoughts. Under such conditions, a book would be a great remedy to your stress! Reading a book you enjoy or losing yourself in a novel is a great way to relax. A novel can transport you to different worlds and keep you entertained, letting tensions drain away. In fact, research has shown the reading can relax your body by lowering your heart rate and reducing the tension in your muscles. So, when you feel stressed, feel free to get a book for yourself! It is easy to just stick to one way of viewing the world. It may be because of our upbringing, the environment we live in and our experiences. Reading allows you to be open to the perspectives of people from different walks of life. Indeed, reading lets us find wonder in the world and imparts useful knowledge to us. When you experience life through the eyes of another person, you encounter different angles on life’s most common problems. The reason why I want to point this out is that most of us are holed up in our own worlds. Due to our busy lifestyles, our busy work schedules and stressful deadlines, we forget the world around us. We end up locked in the boredom and drab of the modern world, where we follow pre-prepared routines. Reading regularly helps us to see more of the world, albeit through a book. An eloquent way to put it would be that reading frees us from our current state of thinking and encourages us to see the world differently.

If knowledge is power, then reading is your superpower. Learning never stops and reading helps you to do just that. Indeed, reading is one of the primary ways to gain knowledge. Tip #1: Make it Easy

Let’s say you want to master the habit of reading. If you know that you have a busy lifestyle and little time, you could aim to read just one page a day. Over time, you could scale it up to a chapter a day or even a book a day. This makes it easy for you to consistently read everyday, even when you feel unmotivated. Likewise, for all habits, make your habit easy to accomplish and free of pressure.

Of course, there might be days where we don’t feel like doing anything. You could have had a long day at work or a stressful day. We’ve all been there before. On these days, the majority of people would skip their habits. However, habits are built upon repetition. It is therefore important to ensure that you at least engage in your habit once a day. This builds upon Tip #1, where you should make your habit easy to accomplish. During such days, you could choose to let’s say read only a page a day or complete only 1 pushup a day. Using Tip #1, you will be able to be consistent even when you lack the motivation or willpower. However, there might be some days where we slipped or completely forgot about the habit. In these situations, it is important to get back on track as quickly as possible. As you do so, think about why you failed earlier and plan for the future. Was it your environment? Was it that your cues weren’t strong enough? Or did you just forget it completely?

Tip #3: Understand Your Environment

A person’s environment inadvertently influences his/her feelings and thoughts. Likewise, when engaging in your habit, it is important to make your environment conducive for your selected habit. For example, if you are trying to build the habit of reading, you could find a quiet and calm place to read, such as a room or a cafe. This avoids distractions and ensures that you are in the mood for the activity. Such devices help you to focus on your task at hand and avoid those notifications which scream for your attention.

Tip #4: Reward Yourself

Habits are built around a reward system. The four stages of a habit is as follows: Cue, Craving, Response and Reward. Most habits have a long-term reward. Reading promises improved vocabulary while exercise promises better health and stamina. However, these long-term rewards are not very noticeable. So how do we ensure that we are motivated to repeat a certain activity again and again? The answer is the reward you place for yourself at the end of an activity or milestone achieved. For example, you could tell yourself, “If I finish this chapter today, I will eat my favourite snack.” These short-term rewards are the little things that will help to keep you going. Eventually, however, the completion of the habit itself will become the reward.
