How Curiosity is Relevant in the Modern World

Curiosity is the art of asking questions, no matter how dumb it might seem. As we age and mature, we gradually lose this ability. We are afraid that people would judge and criticise us. This is worsened by the fact that we are accustomed to following orders blindly, in the workplace or in school. As a result, we become mere machines, made to follow a specified routine or order. Our lives become meaningless. Curiosity, on the other hand, grants us the ability to think for ourselves and explore more about this world. In fact, many inventions would not exist if not for the curiosity of the scientists and engineers who designed them. In this article, we will explore why curiosity is important and how it influences our way of thinking. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter. #1: It Enhances Observational Skills

Source: https://www.csoonline.com/article/3268030/the-best-cybersecurity-analysts-should-play-the-part-of-detective.html

Curiosity is said to be the defining factor which separates Sherlock Holmes from everyone else. While climbing a staircase, Sherlock would count the number of steps while a normal person would happily do so without any second thoughts. It is the curiosity of this famed detective that allowed him to be mindful of his surroundings and solve a crime using the tiniest of details, which an average joe would dismiss as normal or insignificant. As Sherlock famously proclaims, without curiosity “You see, but you do not observe.”

#2: It Lets You See Things In Different Perspectives

Source: https://www.livescience.com/can-you-ever-stop-thinking.html

As humans, it is common for us to think in a fixed and biased manner. Unable to see the world in a different perspective, we become rigid and inflexible. We are afraid to ask ourselves “what if?” Curiosity, however, grants us the ability to analyse a problem in different angles and find a solution, despite it being seemingly unsolvable. Sometimes, the solution to a problem is right in front of us. It just takes a curious mind to identify it. Nothing becomes unsolvable for you and with this mindset, you will have the potential to change the world.

#3: Your Mind Becomes Active and Sharp

Source: https://thriveglobal.com/stories/you-have-the-power-over-your-mind/

Instead of waiting to have answers delivered on a plate, as we are so used to, a curious mind will seek them for itself. In other words, it becomes proactive. Your mind becomes hungry for knowledge and starts to notice details which would otherwise be ignored. The mind is like a muscle; use it and it grows, leave it and it atrophies. Curiosity always gets your mind working and this results in greater intelligence, concentration and memory. As Samuel Johnson once said, “Curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigourous intellect.” Indeed, intelligence is useless without curiosity, as the latter is the one that brings the former to use.

Conclusion

Curiosity is a skill that everyone must possess in this ever-changing world. We must not become overly dependent on the internet or technology to solve our problems. Only when we open our minds to different possibilities and perspectives can mankind advance further. Should Everyone Learn Music?

It’s common to see parents send their children to all sorts of classes, including music classes. Obviously, parents want the best for their children. They want them to excel in everything they can and be better than their peers. But is what they are doing correct? Today, we will discuss whether everyone should learn music and analyse the topic from the perspective of parents. Before you continue reading, remember to follow me and subscribe to the newsletter on my website.

Why Parents Force Their Children To Learn Music

Source: https://www.sso.org.sg/bravissimo/bravissimo-june-2019/dont-shoot-the-piano-tuner

There are many reasons as to why parents force their children to learn music. Some of them include better intelligence and creativity. Or it could just be because “It’s a nice skill to learn!”, as most parents proclaim. Indeed, there are many benefits learning music can bring, such as better hearing, coordination and dexterity. Research has shown that music enhances cognitive development in children and builds new neural connections, thereby improving brain structure. Furthermore, it enhances memory and concentration. But is it worth it?

Why It Doesn’t Work

Source: https://www.azcentral.com/story/all-the-moms/2017/03/23/text-anxiety-a-5-step-plan-for-parents-to-help-their-stressed-out-kid/109564854/

Sure, there are many ways that learning music can benefit your child. However, it is all useless if your child is not happy learning it. All of us have our own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. One child might enjoy playing the piano while another might find it torturous. Naturally, your child might resent you and all that he/she has learnt. Without the necessary motivation, your child will not benefit from learning music. Rather, more damage is done. The key is to find out what your child likes to do, be it drawing, cooking or playing the violin. Only when your child loves what he/she does, can he/she have the potential to be the best at it.

Conclusion

The answer to this question is a resounding no. While learning music has many benefits, everyone should have the freedom to decide whether or not they want to do so. It should not be imposed on everyone. This applies to any other skill and choices in life. A person’s happiness is more important than the skills he/she possesses.

How to Get Rid of a Bad Habit

Bad habits are indeed like a comfortable bed; easy to get into, but hard to get out of. If left untreated, bad habits can escalate into an addiction. It is therefore important to get rid of these bad habits before they go out of control. In this article, let us see how we can effectively eradicate these habits. Before you continue reading, remember to follow me and subscribe to the newsletter.

Tip #1: Make it Hard

Source: https://breakthrough-sales.com/2019/01/18/a-sales-managers-most-difficult-task/

The first step to breaking a bad habit is making it difficult to accomplish. To do so, you must identify and destroy your cues. For example, if you are looking to quit smoking, throw away all your cigarettes and never go near a shop selling them. Most people relapse from their bad habits as they think that it wouldn’t hurt to just see it. But that isn’t true. It’s the same thing as a gambling addict watching people gamble. By putting yourself in temptation, it makes it very easy for you to relapse. At the same time, write down the negative consequences of the bad habit you are trying to get out of. For example, you could write “Smoking can cause lung cancer and kill me.” or “Gambling will cause me to waste my hard-earned money and destroy my family.” Every time you feel yourself slipping back into it, remember what you wrote and that should deter you from doing it again.

Tip #2: Replace it With a Good Habit

Source: https://www.inc.com/james-paine/5-billionaires-who-credit-their-success-to-reading.html

Introducing another habit such as reading will distract your mind and keep you occupied. The previous bad habit suddenly becomes less pleasurable and addictive as your body focuses on the new habit. Try to engage in something you love. Your mind does not have time to think about the old habit anymore and naturally quitting it becomes much easier. If you want to build a good habit effectively, check out my article at https://bestofwrite.com/2020/11/30/how-to-build-a-habit-effectively/ to learn more.

Tip #3: Reward Yourself

Source: https://www.surveymonkey.com/curiosity/to-reward-or-not-to-reward/

By rewarding yourself for quitting a habit, you make it much more enticing to do so. These rewards inspire and push you forward even when your motivation and willpower is low. Give yourself something you like to eat. Give yourself a movie.

Tip #4: If You Relapse, Get Back on Track Fast

Source: https://www.aconsciousrethink.com/12042/follow-give-up-on-dreams/

You might be tempted to give up when you relapse. You start to doubt whether your efforts are working and giving results. The truth is, all of us slip and fall sometimes. It’s okay to make mistakes, but what’s most important is to pick yourself up and push on further and don’t give up. By doing so, you avoid derailing your hard work and become one step closer to success.

The Consequences of Deforestation

As technology advances, our need for resources increases as well. Likewise, as the population on Earth increases, our energy and material needs increases as well. This is seen in the rise in urbanisation and agriculture which has resulted in increased forest clearing. One example of this is the increase in widespread deforestation. Our need for paper and furniture has led to the destruction of many acres of forests, causing enhanced global warming. This article will show you how deforestation harms our environment and our planet. Before you continue reading, remember to follow me and subscribe to the newsletter!

#1: Enhanced Global Warming

Source: https://www.whoi.edu/know-your-ocean/ocean-topics/climate-ocean/global-warming/

Forests are famously known as the lungs of the Earth. As many of you have learnt in school, trees give out oxygen when they photosynthesise during the day while taking in carbon dioxide. This helps to regulate the concentration of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere. Forests are therefore also known as carbon sinks. However, rampant deforestation has resulted in an increase in concentration greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The result is enhanced global warming, whereby global temperatures are predicted to rise as a result of infrared radiation being trapped in the atmosphere. Consequently, an increase in global temperatures will cause a rapid increase in the rate of ice melting in both poles of the Earth.

#2: Many Animal Species Will Be Endangered

Source: https://ebird.org/species/pumtan2

The image above shows a picture of the endangered Purplish-mantled Tanager. Its species are endangered as a result of widespread deforestation and habitat loss. As can be seen, deforestation might result in the extinction of numerous species which rely on forests for food and shelter. The extinction of such species will disrupt the ecosystem and destroy numerous food chains. Let’s imagine that the Purplish-mantled Tanager went extinct. The animals that used to feed on the Purplish-mantled Tanager might go extinct due to the loss of a food source. Likewise, the insects that the Purplish-mantled Tanager fed on during its existence would suddenly thrive and increase in population. The result is imbalance in our ecosystem.

#3: Soil Erosion and Flooding

Source: https://concordia.ab.ca/tuesday-oct-22nd-research-talk-with-dr-christine-martineau/

Trees help to hold the soil together by anchoring the soil with their roots. Without these trees, soil erosion can occur easily. Rains and floods are now able to wash away the top layer of soil with little or no resistance, thereby also washing away the nutrients needed to regenerate plant life in the future.

#4: Desertification

Source: https://youmatter.world/en/droughts-desertification-increases-global-warming-climate/

Trees play an important role in the water cycle. Tree roots take in water from the ground and return water vapour into the air through transpiration. In the absence of trees, the previously forested area becomes much drier. As a result, levels of precipitation in the area will decrease due to a decrease in water vapour in the atmosphere and reduced cloud formation. As the area becomes warmer and drier, the previously forested area can become a desert, as the occurrence of drought increases.

Why You Should Own An Exercise Bike

Most of us are stuck at home during this COVID-19 pandemic, with gyms closed and public areas restricted. Most of us have started to exercise at home. Many have also began to purchase fitness equipment such as treadmills, cross trainers and exercise bikes to adapt to this lifestyle. In this article, I will show you why an exercise bike is something you should own for yourself. Before you continue reading, remember to follow me and subscribe to the newsletter!

Reason #1: You Can Use it Anytime

Like most other fitness equipment, an exercise bike can be used at home regardless of rain or shine. There is no need to go to the gym, which has limited operating hours. Also, unlike a gym, there is no need to share the exercise bike with anybody. It’s all yours to use, anytime you want.

Reason #2: It’s An Easy Way to Burn Calories and Lose Weight

Photo by Daniel Reche on Pexels.com

An hour on the exercise bike can burn you a lot of calories. For those of you looking to lose weight, owning an exercise bike is an excellent choice. An hour on the exercise bike can help you to burn an average of 600 calories. It also helps to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This, in addition to a healthy diet, will help you to burn your fat away and achieve an athletic body.

Reason #3: It’s a Low-Impact Workout Equipment

Source: https://experiencelife.com/article/feed-your-joints/

Unlike other forms of workouts, cycling on an exercise bike uses only the smooth movements of your legs. Since your feet do not lift off the pedals doing the workout, your joints, knees, ankles and hips are protected from unnecessary pressure. This reduces the risk of injury you might face from cycling on an exercise bike, while still providing you with an effective workout.

Reason #4: It Helps to Develop Muscular Strength

Cycling on an exercise bike utilises numerous muscle groups, such as those of your back, legs and thigh. Regular cycling helps to tone these muscles and build muscular strength. In fact, you are able to adjust the resistance level of the exercise bike, thereby adjusting the intensity of your workout. If you feel like giving yourself a challenging workout, you could give yourself a higher resistance level to cycle with. Likewise, if you are tired and don’t feel as energised, you could give yourself a lower resistance level to work with. Furthermore, the ability to determine and control the resistance level of your bike makes it suitable for adults and children of any age.

Reason #5: It Improves the Strength of Your Heart

Photo by ATC Comm Photo on Pexels.com

Cycling on an exercise bike is a great cardiovascular workout. It is a high intensity workout and get your heart pumping. Cycling regularly has been shown to increase the efficiency of your heart at pumping blood. Likewise, it also lowers blood pressure, especially if you have high blood pressure, and helps to regulate your blood sugar levels. Last but not least, as I mentioned earlier, cycling on an exercise bike helps to reduce bad cholesterol levels, thereby resulting in less plague build-up in your arteries and reducing the risk of heart attack. Research has also shown that cycling on a stationary bike for 30 minutes a day and 5 days per week can extend your lifespan.

Thanks for reading! If you are curious as to how you can build up habits such as riding your exercise bike regularly, you can read my article at https://bestofwrite.com/2020/11/30/how-to-build-a-habit-effectively/ to learn more.

Why You Should Save

At some point in our lives, many of us have heard about the importance of saving. However, it’s surprising to see that many people fail to practice this. In fact, many people slide into poverty and debt due to the aforementioned reason. Worst still, many people make up excuses like “I don’t earn enough to save!” to explain their inability to do so. This mentality will only cause you to be financially trapped. So let us see why saving is so important. Before you continue reading, make sure you follow my page and subscribe to my newsletter.

Reason #1: Emergencies

As humans, we can never predict what will happen in the future. We might lose our jobs, lose a loved one or lose money in the stock market. We might even be hit by a pandemic such as the current COVID-19. Saving ensures that you will always have a back-up in times like these, especially when you do not have enough money to repay your bills. The good news is that you have the ability to plan now and strategise.

Reason #2: It Will Grant You a Better Retirement

Photo by Huy Phan on Pexels.com

As we grow older, our ability to work declines. Our health might begin to fail and you will naturally lose the ability to sustain your previous lifestyle. Saving early helps to reduce the financial burden you might face when you grow older and allows you to do the things you enjoy.

Reason #3: Financial Independence and Freedom

Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Pexels.com

As we grow older, we learn that we have to rely on ourselves to survive in this world. Nobody is going to fork out the money you need when you are in debt. You have to plan, strategise and manage your money yourself. To achieve financial security and independence, saving is a must as it allows you to prepare against unexpected events and emergencies. Fun fact, even chipmunks know that they have to store nuts to get through the winter. Let us not rely on others, especially our parents and friends, to take the fall for us when we end up in debt or end up bankrupt, since nobody owes us a living. Saving also allows you to make life decisions without overly worrying about your finances as you are prepared. You control your finances, not the other way around. This is what financial freedom means.

Reason #5: Take Advantage of Interest Rates and Compounding

Albert Einstein once declared that compounding is the 8th wonder of the world. Saving over the years allows you to multiply your finances, albeit slowly at first. Let us take for an example that you deposited at total of $300,000 worth of savings in a bank with a 2% annual interest rate. In 30 years, you would have $543,408.48! That is almost double your principle! This is the beauty of saving early. Take for another example. You deposited a total of $1 million in a bank with a 2% annual interest rate. In 30 years, you would have $1,811,361.58 in your bank account! See what I mean now?

Kindle Oasis: A Review

The Pros:

  • Warm Light!
  • 7-inch screen
  • Page Turn Buttons!
  • Snappier Page Turns
  • Premium, sleek and aluminium body

The Cons:

  • Its battery is not as long-lasting as the other Kindles
  • It’s still uses micro-usb
  • It’s quite expensive

My Experience

I myself got the Kindle Oasis for myself a few weeks back. To provide some context, I had been using the 4th Generation Kindle Paperwhite for more than a year before that. I decided that I wanted an upgrade as I found that reading for long periods on the Kindle Paperwhite could give me eye strain and potentially headaches. Sure enough, the warm light on the Kindle Oasis was enough to entice me to buy it. Its warm front light is easier on the eyes and makes reading in the dark easier. You can adjust it manually or schedule it to change according to your timezone. The Kindle Oasis comes in 8GB or 32GB models and you have the option to choose between the Graphite or Champagne-Gold model.

Source: The Verge

The first thing that I noticed was that the lighting across the screen was more balanced and well-lit. This is mostly due to higher number of LEDs (25 LEDs) in the Kindle Oasis 3 compared to the current 4th Generation Kindle Paperwhite (5 LEDs). It was a joy to look at. Resolution-wise, both e-readers have the same resolution of 300ppi. It’s the highest resolution of E-ink on the market. Furthermore, the Kindle Oasis has a wider 7-inch display compared to the Kindle Paperwhite’s 6-inch display.

Source: https://biblebuyingguide.com/kindle-oasis-2019-review/

As a result, the Kindle Oasis is a great choice for reading comics. This is made more enjoyable by the fact that the Kindle Oasis has a pair of satisfying page-turn buttons. On that note, the page-turn buttons was such a great convenience to use. I never had to touch the screen to turn the page and I could read an entire book one-handed. That also means that I would never have annoying smudges on my screen, that is unless I need the services of the dictionary. By default, the top button, when pressed, flips your book to the next page while the bottom button turns it to the previous page. You can change this in the settings menu. Lastly, both the Paperwhite 4 and Kindle Oasis 3 are considered waterproof as they are IPX8 rated and can withstand immersion in water for up to 60 minutes.

The Catch: Battery Life

Since I am a voracious reader, I would say that the battery life of both E-readers are decent. However, as I pointed out earlier above, the Kindle Oasis’ battery life is not as good compared to the other Kindles. I could read for a week or two on my previous Kindle Paperwhite before requiring a charge. On the Kindle Oasis however, I would only be able to read for about 5 days or a week before requiring another charging session. This could be due to the fact that the Kindle Oasis has more LEDs than the Kindle Paperwhite. However, I am not sure either. Many reasons could be responsible for this phenomena, such as the fact that it has an aluminium body which causes it to feel colder to the touch and a higher number of LEDs compared to other contemporary Kindles.

Paperwhite or the Oasis?

Both are great E-readers and they provide an enjoyable reading experience for users of both devices. However, there are a few reasons as to why someone would choose the Paperwhite over the Oasis, or vice versa. This is summarised below.

Reasons to choose the Paperwhite:

  • It starts off at $129.99 while the Oasis starts off at a high price of $249.99
  • The Paperwhite has almost the same specs as the Oasis, despite the fact that the Paperwhite has a smaller 6-inch screen, no warm light option and no page-turn buttons. Hence, if you are on a budget, the Paperwhite will more than suffice.
  • The flat back of the Paperwhite may be more comfortable to hold compared to that of the Oasis for some users.
  • It is also IPX8 rated, which is not the case for the entry-level Kindle.

Reasons to choose the Oasis:

  • It has an adjustable warm front-light, a premium aluminium body and page-turn buttons, designed to give you the best reading experience possible. It also has a wider screen compared to the Paperwhite
  • Money is no problem for you.
  • It is the best E-reader available on the market and is Amazon’s top E-reader.

Conclusion

So, that wraps up this post. The Kindle Oasis has served me well in the past few weeks and I trust that it will do so in the future as well. I hope that this review has been of assistance to you. I will continue to post such content on this blog in the future so keep your eyes peeled! Happy reading!
