There are indeed many types of watches one can choose from. There are mechanical, automatic, quartz and solar-powered quartz watches, which have respectively different functions and features. In this article, we’ll be focusing on solar-powered watches and we’ll show you why you should get one. Before you continue reading, do follow me and subscribe to my newsletter!
They Run On Solar Power, Obviously

Solar-powered watches are able to charge themselves by capturing light energy from nearby light sources. This means that there is no need to replace batteries from time to time. In the grand scheme of things, this means less battery waste and overall is more environmentally friendly as compared to its battery-powered counterparts. The battery units of solar-powered watches often last for 5-10 years before needing a replacement.
They Are Relatively Affordable

Though there are some solar-powered watches that cost $700 or more, it is possible to get a decent one starting from as low as $100. Casio and Citizen are brands that offer reasonably priced, quality and durable solar-powered watches.
They Have Long Battery Reserves

A solar-powered watch will be able to last 6 or more months on a single full charge, depending on the model. This means that you don’t have to worry if you can’t wear it frequently, unlike automatic watches and mechanical watches which require regular winding.
They Are More Accurate Than Mechanical And Automatic Watches

Solar-powered watches utilise quartz movements and are known to be more reliable due to the fact that they will recharge constantly under the presence of light. They usually gain or lose 5 seconds a month while automatic or mechanical watches may gain or lose up to 30 seconds (this depends heavily on quality) in a day.
They Have Increased Durability And Better Water Resistance

It is true that other types of watches can also be made to withstand equal amounts of pressure. However, since solar-powered watches don’t need to be wound and are rarely opened (due to the fact that they don’t need to have their batteries replaced), they are less prone to deterioration and their rubber gaskets are less likely to wear out. They are perfect for people who like to travel outdoors in the great wilderness.

Hi! Thanks for taking to comment on my blog 🙂
I have an affinity for solar powered watches. The rectangular Casio DW-5600 series quietly go about the job of telling the time, ringing alarms and they stay synchronised via radio control. They are tough reliable workhorses!
I have some Citizen watches too. I like the appearance and readability of an analogue display with hands and complications for date and chronograph functions. They are solar powered too.
I inherited an older Citizen Ecodrive and it usually remains hidden away. It only takes a few minutes of sunlight to charge up and it runs again without any issues.
Solar is a great source of energy for low power devices!
All the best!

You are absolutely correct! The Casio DW-5600 has been one of my all time favourites and man it’s extremely durable. It looks simple but they are able to withstand some crazy impacts and damage. (The G-shock version at least) Thanks for reading my blog! 😊

🙂 Honestly, I have never thought about purchasing a solar-powered watch. I had no idea that they could last up to six months and more with a full charge.
I have been considering getting myself an automatic watch.
Why?
Because they acquire power by weighted rotor spins as the wearer turns his wrist, allowing for energy to be stored in the watch’s mainspring.

An automatic watch is great too! It’s just the maintenance cost and high entry cost that drives most people away. P.S. I wear an automatic watch too! Thanks for reading this article and have a great day ahead! 😊
